Journalism Today and Tommorow

"A techno freak" The news organizations have worked the same for many generations. Newspapers were the starting point of giving news to people. Simply written and then distributed throughout the land. In time things changed, but also the mentality of the people. “With all the change to make for a more luxurious life style people expect more luxurious ways to receive news,” said Karen Hill who is an associate director/digital manager at the University of Michigan Press, press.umich.edu.

Luxury means that you don’t need to run to the store and get a newspaper, it means for example opening your cell phone and knowing if there are still tickets available for the next sporting event. The news organizations capitalized from technology and that is why we are currently living in a digital world where nobody knows how we will get our news in many years from now. The digital clutter is made up of all sorts of electronic equipment. For example Cell Phones like some of  the Apple phones that have the possibility of getting internet reception and of course regular computer devices like a regular laptop or any other computer. These instruments have also come a long way since the first cell phones and computers came on the market. “We are changing our ways to receive news, and that from day-to-day,” said Christina Milton of the “University of Michigan Press.”

News organizations have over the past 15 years or so adapted to the digitization of the news business. They have done that by introducing social media options to their web sites. Some of these social media options include Twitter and Facebook. This allows for readers to follow their favorite or most trusted news organizations. Many news organizations today are not able to keep up with this digitization of the media. But it is usually only certain departments of certain news organizations that are suffering under the digitization of news organizations.

The main department has to be the newspapers, the readers usually prefer to go online and read the New York Times on their website than to go and read the original news paper, http://www.nytimes.com. Some people in the news business also want to connect more to their readers. A way to do that is by going on a page that is called Tumblr. This is a site that basically allows for news streaming but is ultimately becoming more popular because it also allows for contact with all sorts of people with a different type of content. This site is basically similar to Facebook and Twitter but it just does not have the popularity that Facebook and Twitter have at this moment.

For news organizations to maintain a certain level of credibility, there must remain a line between editorial and advertising  but how that line is drawn will become even more abstract in the year to come. It is when we try to bring editorial and advertising ways together in a harmonious way that the new digital news organizations are presented with both great challenges and opportunities. If done properly the news consumer stands to benefit from the partnership. A digital nation means that many people will likely go out of business. With the advance of electronics many people especially in the news organization will lose their jobs.

The people who are responsible for the prints that will be released will most likely be replaced by nobody because nobody will read newspapers anymore, or at least not as frequently. There will hardly be anybody on bikes working as a paper boy and that is one of the traditional ways to get news to people. But there will of course also be lots of positive aspects to a digital nation. For example, news will be even more and even easier accessible. It should not be a problem to see international news channels on your cell phone.

The electronic giants like Sony, Samsung etc…. will introduce new and better technologies that will enable us to be updated by simply pressing a button. “The advancement of technology can’t be stoped, so people have to adapt to the new things which will surly be better than what we have today;” said Malik Drexler who is familiar with the French news industries in the area of Nice, http://www.becomingminimalist.com. The organization is better when it comes to how news is delivered. In many European countries the news is constantly read in newspapers. The advance in technology is still felt but many people look at a computer monitor at work all day, so they prefer to read a newspaper while eating breakfast in the morning. When you get your morning rolls for breakfast all you have to do is pick up a newspaper for a couple of cents on the way out because they even sell newspapers in bakeries or just outside bakeries.

My name is Benjamin Kretzschmar and I am from Germany. I like Football (Soccer) and I listen to European electronic music. I have not had a lot of journalism experiences, except a couple of English classes and a broadcasting and media class. I hope to learn something about online journalism. I hope that I can learn how journalism on the web works and I am sure that this class can teach me the main basic rules of online journalism.

Business Feature

Meijers at Zeeb Rd. in Scio Township in Ann Arbor Michigan is one of many shopping centers around the country. They have everything from drinks like juice water and alcohol. They have all sorts of food as well. They even have an international isle where shoppers can get products from Germany, Italy, France Mexico, and some oriental food from the Asian continent.
This shopping center also offers a friendly start to the working world. Young people can for instance start to get an inside look in the life of a working man. It is easy to get a job like carrying the shopping carts or simply working as a cashier. Some people juggle both with school or college and this gives them a good start into the life of a working man. Meijers is recognized through out
theentire United States.
The Meijers at Zeeb Rd. also has its own gas station which is a good indication that the service is good and friendly. It is a good feeling when you get to get gas right away and then go shopping on the same premises. It just makes things easier and it also saves a lot of time.

Online Commenting

I think that it is perfectly normal to be concerned with online commenting, especially when it comes to privacy. In my eyes when somebody wants to be anonymous than it should be his right to be anonymous. I guess that it is a good idea that the New York Times is trying to make people register so that the New York Times have at least some information about who is giving a comment. This makes a lot of sense because when a person writes something that can give the New York Times trouble or any other concern. This means that if the New York Times decides to get the persons information they can. It is also good that it is fair to the privacy rights of a human being. The New York Times does not put the information that they receive about a person during the registration process on the screen so that nobody who does not work for the New York Times sees the information of that person. Some news organizations have people who are responsible for reviewing these comments before they go on the web. They want to basically get rid of comments that attack either certain people who work for that news organization, or comments that make remarks that they don’t want to show to the readers of their news organization.

Photojournalism

I think that the future of photojournalism looks good. I think that there will be an advance in technology! It is impossible to stop the advancements of technology, so everything will become automatically better. Photojournalism will be used today as much as in 100 years. It is a great thing that still photography exists and that we can sometimes do two things at once. By that I mean instead of taking photos of an event and then filming an event, you can only film the certain event and then when you edit your film you can stop at any time and get the best possible still photography picture.

President Barack Obama watches as Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak delivers a televised statement, during a meeting in the Situation Room of the White House, Feb. 1, 2011. Joining the President are Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and other members of his national security team. P020111PS-0581I don’t think that all photos in the future will be from video stills, at least not in the near future. Some cell phone cameras are already much better than the first reall photo cameras. And photographers obviously do not take photos with a cell phone camera! Let’s say that a riot breaks out but by the time the photographer arrives at he scene he realizes that the police is trying to take controll of the situation by sealing of rioters from the normal public. This means that the photographer can probably not get the shots he needs, but a rioter who is filming or taking photos of everything is right in the middle of everything and he might get much better shots than the reall photographer. Since nobody will ever be able to controll time it is impossible for reall phtojournalists to get the pictures he needs. As we saw last monday it is easy to get pictures of Belle Island when you have the time. It took him a year but the video it self was only around 15 minutes long.

Belle Isle Class Assignment

About 1:30 minutes into the film they were flying over Belle Isle and when the plane turned the image was tilted sideways. Just under 5 minutes into the film the camera man was zooming in on mushrooms. At around 6 minutes into the film the camera man was zooming away from a spider on a spiderweb. About 12 minutes into the film the camera man had the camera tilted upward to the crown of some trees and then he tilted the camera down to the bottom of the trees.

Links from Our Midland Daily News.com

My news org only links to other sections within the main website. For example sports, entertainment and so on. Links do not open in a new window, they open in the same window.

Yes, Our Midland News.com uses web shells. http://www.ourmidland.com/contact/, http://www.ourmidland.com/ ( Blogs at the bottom of the page).

I could not find any links that don’t work.

There is enough space at the tool bar at the top of the main page and because of that “AP Entertainment” could have been written differently. By that I mean that the words “AP” could have been written in words and not in apreviations.

Police ruins spring break party

After a noise complaint in a neighborhood in Livonia, Michigan two 20-year-old boys got a Minor in Possession charge because of alcohol and the owner of the house got a providing to a Minor charge.

After the music was turned down and after the three tickets had been written Dennis Wende who goes to Eastern Michigan University asked the police if they could tell him who called the police! The police did not tell him who called the police, “They just said from the neighborhood” said Dennis Wende.

Dennis and some of his other friends were outraged that the police just came because of a noise complaint. After all the questioning and ticket writing the guy who got the Providing for a Minor ticked asked the police why they came because of a noise complaint but gave three dumb tickets for nothing. The police said that they were just doing their job!

After the police said that the house owner asked the police if they could please leave. The police replied that they don’t have to leave when they fell that there is something that’s suspicious. Dennis Wende asked the police what is so suspicious right now.

As the police was about to answer Dennis’s question the house owner said that he wants to see a search warrant from the police. The police then said that we don’t have one and that we don’t need one when we see suspicious behavior.

The police also said to the house owner that he is lucky not to go to jail because this was his first offense and that the police is cutting him a break. After the police said that the house owner calmed down and let the police search the house.

Since they knew that they had nothing to hide, the police found nothing and left right away.

Week 10 Blog

Our Midland Daily News website shows a normal navigation bar that has all sorts areas that you can go to. If I want to find out the latest sport results or other sports information I just need to click on the sports buton on the top of the page where the navigation bar is located. Underneath each categorie of the navigation bar it has even more information, for example when I click on entertainment it says that I can also click on calender, verge, AP calender etc….

The first time that I looked at the web site I quickly realized that this is just another normal web site. I saw the navigation bar and thought as I scrolled down that everything is pretty organized and easy to follow. It looks like that they use the inverted pyramyd as the page goes down from top stories to crime and then to local news and I think that that shows good unity. The alignment of the page is o.k. but I think that there is too much advertisment on the sides.

I don’t like the contrast of the web site because the writing on the navigation bar is so small and in a boring white color while the headlines or the titles of the stories have a more vibrant blue color with bigger letters. I think that is good but I don’t like that the advertisments have almost the biggest writing on the entire web site and I think that that is not what people want to see as the web site is supposed to concentraten on news and not advertisements. They do use different colors that show the difference between the navigation bar and the news stories. There is a calender on the main page where the background is brown and orange while that is also the background of some news stories. But it is not too bad as it is easy to see the difference between a news story and a calender.

The navigation bar at the top shows good hiearchy. It is nicely organized but like I said earlier I am not so happy with the color choice and letter size choice on the navigation bar. It is good that there are no images that are next to the links on the navigation bar and it is also good that there are some pictures next to some news stories because it might convey the reader even more to click on the link to get him to the story.

It looks like that the web site uses good consistency. I like the fact that they use the same colors and the same size of words, even though I am not happy with the sizes that they use for the words. This web site is very easy to follow and that is in my eyes a big plus point. Each page looks basically the same, the only difference is that each page has different information and that is for obvious reasons.

I would make less advertisements on the main page, or at least hide them on the bottom of the page. I would give the web site a more friendly look and use brighter colors for the biggest news and I would also make the letters of the words a bit bigger. I think that would create a better contrast between the news that are most important and the news that are less important.
